Shell Scripting Primer

I discovered that Apple have a neat Shell Scripting Primer freely available on the Apple Developer Connection site.

While this won’t replace either “The Unix Programming Environment or “Unix Shell Programming” if you want to get into serious command line hacking on your Mac or Linux box it is certainly enough for those wanting a guide to write the odd script for daily use.

If you want to get the best out of your Mac then understanding the shell is a necessity. If you really want to become a power user then combine this with AppleScript and Automator.

If you have a Mac then don’t ignore the Apple Developer Connection – Apple’s site does concentrate on fairly high powered developers using Objective-C but has a great deal of information for much simpler folk, including neat notes on OS X Server.
